Barcelona has a reputation for being an expensive city to eat in. And it can be, if you sit down anywhere on Las Ramblas or in Barceloneta. But the menú del día in Barcelona remains the smartest way to eat well without blowing your budget. You just need to know where to look.

The average price of a menú del día in Barcelona ranges from €14 to €18 in the city center, and can drop to €11–13 if you move away from the touristy areas. There are options for every budget if you know the neighborhoods.

What to expect from a menú del día in Barcelona

The structure follows the classic Spanish format: starter, main course, dessert or coffee, a drink and bread included. But Barcelona has its own quirks:

  • More international variety than other cities. It's easy to find Asian, Mexican, Peruvian or Middle Eastern menús del día at Spanish set-menu prices.
  • Pa amb tomàquet (bread rubbed with tomato) often replaces plain bread. And that's just fine.
  • Somewhat shorter hours: many places serve the menú from 1pm to 3:30pm (in Madrid they usually go on until 4pm).
  • Fridays get trickier: more people eating out, and some places raise the price or cut back on options.

The best neighborhoods for a set-menu lunch

Eixample

Barcelona's office heartland. Between Urgell, Passeig de Gràcia and Diagonal there are hundreds of options. Menus run €14–17 with varied, high-quality cooking. Places like Positano Pizzeria, Can Boneta Clínic or MOSCADA rotate their menu daily with fresh produce. If you work around Gran Via or Aragó, you'll have plenty to choose from.

Ciutat Vella (Raval, Born, Gothic Quarter)

El Raval is chaotic, noisy and wonderful for eating cheap. Menus start at €10–12 in restaurants covering every cuisine in the world. Rosa Negra Raval serves a Mexican menú, Cafè Pablo in El Born is a classic, and Assalto near Paral·lel has chef-driven tapas at set-menu prices. The upper part of El Raval, near Ronda Sant Antoni, has taverns with menus of €12–14.

Poblenou and 22@ (Sant Martí)

Barcelona's tech district. Plenty of startup and corporate workers eat here every day. Menus range from €14–18 and tend to be more contemporary. Esnaf Barcelona (4.8 on Appetece) is one of the neighborhood's gems, L'Artesana Poblenou bets on market produce, and Desoriente blends Asian and Mediterranean flavors.

Gràcia

Gràcia is a village within Barcelona, and it eats like one. Home-style menus, generous portions, prices of €12–15. L'Arrosseria Xàtiva Gràcia is the go-to for rice dishes, and Restaurant Cal Boter has been serving honest Catalan cooking for decades. Plenty of vegetarian and organic spots too, which fits Gràcia's vibe.

Les Corts

An upmarket residential neighborhood. Bistró Mató has a chef-driven menú at a good price, and Bar Granja Les Corts is the classic neighborhood bar where you eat well without any fuss. Menus of €13–16 with carefully prepared cooking.

Sarrià-Sant Gervasi

A wealthier area with menus of €15–18 but high quality. Casa Telmo (4.7) offers market cooking, and Brasería Sarrià (4.9) is one of the highest-rated in all of Barcelona. If you work in the upper part of town, it's worth exploring.

Sants-Montjuïc

A working-class neighborhood with honest menus. The Sants-Estació area and Carrer de Sants have long-standing restaurants with menus of €11–14. 4 Latas Hostafrancs offers great value for money, and abba mia Restaurant is a pleasant surprise near the station. Classic Catalan cooking: escudella, botifarra amb mongetes, arròs a la cassola.

Eating well every day without going broke

Move away from the coast. Any restaurant within three streets of the sea will charge you an invisible premium for the location. Head inland and prices drop.

Markets are your friend. El Mercat de Sant Antoni, La Boqueria (if you avoid the front row), the Mercat de l'Abaceria in Gràcia or Santa Caterina in El Born have stalls and bars with excellent menus.

Look for the "menú de mediodía." In Barcelona, many places call it that instead of "menú del día." It's the same thing: fixed price, a full meal, at midday.

Use Appetece so you don't repeat yourself. When you eat out five days a week, going back to the same restaurant gets boring. With Appetece you see what's on today in your area and always try something new.

The schedule situation

In Barcelona the menú del día runs Monday to Friday, generally from 1pm to 3:30pm. A few places in Gràcia and Poble-sec stretch it to 4pm, but that's unusual. Some places offer menus on Saturday lunchtimes too, especially in residential areas.

Thursdays and Fridays tend to be busier. If you can, eat right at 1pm to get a table and the best options of the day.

Barcelona beyond downtown also knows how to eat

L'Hospitalet has menús del día at prices you'd expect from ten years ago. Badalona and Sant Adrià are full of restaurants with menus of €10–12. Cornellà and Esplugues have options for people working around the Gran Via business district.

It's not all Eixample and El Born. The outlying neighborhoods have honest cooking at honest prices.

Barcelona is lived at midday. The menú del día is the best way to experience the city every day without overspending. You just need to know where to look.
